Did you know, you must be at least 14 years old to legally ride an electric bike on public roads, cycle lanes, or cycle paths in the UK.
This rule applies specifically to standard electric bikes that meet the UK's Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations.
If an e-bike has been modified to go faster than 15.5 mph, has a motor more powerful than 250W, or can be propelled entirely by a throttle without pedalling, it is no longer legally classified as a bicycle. It is treated like a moped or motorcycle.
For these vehicles, the rider must be at least 16 years old and must possess a valid driving licence, insurance, vehicle tax, and an approved helmet.
